Do you have or know a child or grandchild, niece, nephew or godchild who has ever experienced some social anxiety (deeply ingrained fear of being rejected, ostracized, criticized, or otherwise “voted off the island” by friends or peers)?

Social anxiety is the most common reason someone seeks therapy.

Its very natural to want to be included, supported, and to have a feeling of belonging. Our brains are hard-wired to want this! Sometimes children can have experiences that cause them to doubt the sense of inclusiveness. Being picked last to be on a team, the friend group sitting without you at lunch, the slumber party that you did not get invited to—these “minor” experiences can, for some kids, be devastating.

I wrote this book “Ava Queen of the Jungle” about recognizing and overcoming the self doubt that can accompany social anxiety.

Hope you will enjoy the entertaining and lively drawings by Lee Lorenz, former Art Editor of The New Yorker Magazine.
